Cherry Mill Supported Accommodation

"Books have been written about the positive effects of housing on mental health, but this scheme at Cherry Mill is living proof of this"
Tracey Gunning, Service Manager, Liverpool City Council
  • Award-winning new build supported living scheme, for adults with complex mental health issues.

  • The accommodation, tailored towards the needs of the residents, had an immediate and unprecedented impact on the residents in terms of personal development.

  • Layout designed with 'transparency' in mind - making the building 'easy to read', and providing reassurance for residents.

  • Accommodation extends to the roofspace, reducing the building's  overall height and potential impact on the adjacent streetscape, whilst also complying with Planning stipulations.

  • The design comprises individual and spacious apartments for each resident, with en-suite and private kitchen facilities, and with additional communal lounge with fully glazed elevation -  providing stunning views across the river to North Wales, and maximising natural light.

  • With 'space and light' being key drivers, walls to the communal lounge are curved - to soften and remove any potential for 'boxiness'.

  • High levels of insulation provide a calming effect, with minimal noise transfer, which was commented on straight away by staff.

  • A sedum roof installation to the lounge, helps to moderate internal temperatures, whilst also helping to minimise the impact of storm water surges on the drainage system.

  • The scheme benefits from high efficiency gas boilers, keeping heating bills to a minimum and saving energy resources.  In their first November following occupancy, residents actually requested that the heating be turned down.

  • Winner:  Green Apple Built Environment Award, June 14; ‘Best Green Home’, Your Move Property Awards, 2012; Green Apple Environmental Best Practice Award,  2012; Finalist NW Construction Awards 13; Finalist LABC NW Awards 2013.
