  • This award-winng refurbishment of the Grade II listed 'Old Science Classroom' in Liverpool has provided high quality accommodation, whilst also maintaining the integrity of the original building, which dates back to 1894.

  • The project, however, was not without its challenges, which included creation of a new staircase to provide upper floor access, without compromise to the original open beam 'ceiling'.

  • A further challenge was in addressing the fenestration to the original facade, whilst paying homage to the former open nature of the ground floor, with its clearly defined bays.

  • Addition of an external 'staircase extension' has enabled upper floor access without detriment to the original timber beam 'ceiling', which has been retained and refurbished.

  • Lowering of the ground floor slab facilitated the necessary ground floor headroom, fulfilling the client brief, whilst achieving the necessary statutory compliance

  • Contemporary slatted cladding between the supporting columns maimises light transfer, whilst also accentuating the former open bays.

  • The seriously derelict building has been brought back to life, and its architectural heritage has been retained for future generations to enjoy.

" The renovation has been highly successful, subtly marrying traditional and modern in this Grade II listed building which can now blend into the surrounding architecture and start to become appreciated ".
